Blockchain in Prague
The Czech Republic is one of the most ‘cryptocurrency-connected’ countries. In Prague, one can rent a room in the hotel, have lunch and even get an education using bitcoins. Many Czechs use cryptocurrency, especially for cross-border payments. According to the Central Bank of the Czech Republic, “electronic transactions with bitcoins around the world are equivalent to only 16% of electronic transactions made in the Czech crown.”
There are a lot of possibilities for cryptocurrency application in the Czech Republic. So, in Prague alone, Bitcoin can be used to pay in more than 80 places, including the famous Paralelni Polis. The digital currency, along with fiat money, is accepted by cafes, restaurants, the Alza electronics online store, hotels, the GoPay payment system and the private institute, CEVRO Institut.
Dozens of blockchain companies operate in the Czech Republic, including an incubator for blockchain innovations, Adelphoi.io; fintech startups SDK.finance, Cashila, finGOOD; service of bitcoin banking wBTCb; the country has a close-knit community of enthusiasts in the field of cryptography and IT with a center in the unique center of science and art Paralelni Polis.
Since January 2017, the Czech Republic has limited the anonymity of cryptocurrencies transactions: exchanges and other exchange services are obliged to verify their customers. In general, the authorities of the country are loyal to digital currencies. For example, in its publication the Czech National Bank called Prague “the home for cryptocurrency users” and announced that one shouldn’t be afraid of bitcoins.
